7kW vs 22kW EV Chargers: What Charging Speed Does Your Home Actually Need?
One of the first numbers you will see when researching home EV chargers is 7kW, 11kW or 22kW.
But a higher number doesn't automatically mean a better charger for every household.

What does 7kW mean?

A 7kW charger can deliver electricity to an EV at up to approximately 7 kilowatts under suitable conditions.
For many homes, this provides a practical balance between charging speed and household electrical requirements.
Australian Government guidance identifies dedicated home EV chargers as commonly operating between 7 and 22kW.

What about 22kW?

A 22kW charger can potentially charge an EV much faster — but the charger alone doesn't determine the actual charging speed.
The vehicle itself must be capable of accepting that charging rate, and the home's electrical infrastructure must also support the installation.
That means a 22kW charger may provide little benefit if the EV cannot accept 22kW AC charging.

What should homeowners check?

Before choosing a charger, consider:
Your EV's maximum AC charging rate
Your home's electrical supply
Existing household loads
Solar system capacity
How many kilometres you drive
How long the vehicle is parked at home
Whether you want smart charging
If your car sits in the garage overnight for 10 hours, you may not need the fastest possible charger.

The solar factor

If you have rooftop solar, the charging strategy becomes even more important.
You may want to schedule charging when solar production is available, or coordinate the EV with a home battery and other major loads.
That is where an integrated energy approach can become more useful than simply buying the highest-powered charger available.
